Neem, (Azadirachta indica), fast-growing tree of the mahogany family (Meliaceae), valued as a medicinal plant, as a source of organic pesticides, and for its timber. Neem has long been used in Ayurvedic and folk medicine and is native to the Indian subcontinent and dry areas of South Asia. It has been introduced to parts of Africa, the Caribbean, and numerous counties in South and Central America.
The tree can reach heights of 15–30 metres (50–100 feet) and has a dense, rounded crown. The evergreen leaves are pinnately compound (feather-formed), with 8 to 19 toothed leaflets. The small, white, fragrant flowers are borne in drooping panicles and are pollinated by insects. The fruit is a smooth, yellowish green drupe that contains a single seed.
Highly drought-tolerant, the neem tree is capable of thriving in semi-arid environments. Its deep taproot allows it to access water far below the surface, making it an excellent candidate for reforestation and desertification control.
Nearly all parts of the neem tree are useful, and many of its medicinal and cosmetic uses are based on its antibacterial and antifungal properties. Neem oil, extracted from the seeds, is used in soaps, cosmetics, and traditional pharmaceuticals. The leaves have historically been used to treat skin diseases, while the twigs are commonly used as natural toothbrushes to maintain dental hygiene in rural India.
Neem extract is a highly effective, environmentally friendly biopesticide. The primary active compound, azadirachtin, disrupts the feeding and reproductive cycles of more than 200 species of insect pests while remaining relatively harmless to beneficial insects, birds, and mammals. Furthermore, the residue left after oil extraction (neem cake) is used as an excellent organic fertilizer that enriches the soil and protects plant roots from nematodes.
Beyond its direct uses, the neem tree provides significant ecological benefits. Its lush canopy offers deep shade, regulating local microclimates and mitigating the urban heat island effect. It acts as a natural air filter, trapping dust and absorbing pollutants. Neem is also considered a high-grade species for carbon sequestration, capable of trapping carbon dioxide for over 150 years.
